I just internalized that speaking in tones means you actually change the pitch of your voice. I don't know what I thought it meant, but that's what it means. It's not the same pitch for everyone, just relative to your own voice. Not quite at the level of Helen Keller connecting the word water to the feeling of water running over her hands, but related.
